Early 1920s Allen A Swim Suit

From the Great Gatsby era, this is an early 1920s maillot bathing suit. With those "boy cut legs" this swimsuit has the definitive, glamorous style expected from the very first maillot designs.

The color is regal lapis lazuli blue with ivory trim. The label reads "core yarn" which is the earliest form of stretch knit. The yarn, developed during the year 1920, is made from an inner rubber core, and in this case wrapped with superfine merino wool. The suit is so incredibly soft in comparison to most and the knitting gauge is so tiny that you will need a magnifier to count the stitches.

The swimsuit has a very early 1920s design embroidered label from this company which was known for their fine swimwear. It reads "Allan A Swim Suit" and indicates "Core Yarn" as well with the early Allen A logo and the number 38. This may have been an inventory or style number, because if this is a sizing number...this suit was not measured in any way as we do in today's world!
